How Our Team Would Use the 80K Chase Sapphire Preferred Bonus

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card   is currently offering a huge bonus of 80,000 points after spending $4,000 within three months of card membership. That's up from the standard bonus of 60,000 points, making this one of the best bonuses you can get on this card – or any travel card, period.
But if you're interested in taking advantage, you'll need to act fast. This limited-time offer is ending Thursday morning, May 25!
Wondering just what can those 80,000 points get you? Between the ability to book flights and hotels directly through Chase,   transfer them to more than a dozen airline or hotel partners , these points can book a lot of trips.
So let's make it real. The entire Thrifty Traveler team turned on wanderlust mode and dreamed up how we'd each put these points to use.

Jared & Erica: Business Class to Europe on Air France
Thrifty Traveler founder and CEO Jared and his wife Erica would both use a bonus of 80,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points to fly KLM business class between their home airport of Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) and Amsterdam (AMS).
Since Flying Blue – the shared loyalty program of Air France and KLM – is a Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer partner , you can instantly send Chase points to Flying Blue to book these flights for just 61,000 miles and $204.60 of taxes and fees each.

Got a spouse or go-to travel partner? You can both open a Chase Sapphire Card and earn 160,000 points total!
It's hard to beat lie-flat seats on a nonstop flight to Europe from our home airport. We'd each have 19,000 points to spare to book other intra-Europe flights to explore beyond Amsterdam.
Plus, when you fly KLM you'll get one of the airline's famous Delft Blue miniature houses , filled with Dutch gin. Each one depicts a real Dutch building, and they're highly collectible. The airline has been offering these to business-class passengers since the 1950s!

Nick: 2 Nights at the Park Hyatt Kyoto
Now it's my turn.
After booking a trip to Japan later this year, I plan on using 80,000 points from the current limited-time offer on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card to book two nights at the luxurious Park Hyatt Kyoto.
The Park Hyatt Kyoto is a category 8 property, meaning a standard room will cost 40,000 World of Hyatt points per night.  With  Hyatt introducing peak and off-peak award pricing  in 2021, it's possible to pay as few as 35,000 points per night for an award at this property, or as much as 45,000 during a peak period.
But the two nights I am looking to book would cost $2,123 each night ($4,246 total) if I was paying cash. Gulp.

Since Hyatt is a transfer partner of Chase, I can instead transfer just 80,000 points directly into my Hyatt account and book the two nights I need – both nights are priced at the standard 40,000 points.

The hotel officially opened in late 2019, but thanks to the pandemic it was closed off to most foreigners for nearly three years. So even though the Park Hyatt Kyoto is nearing its fourth birthday, it should still feel brand new for years to come, and I can't wait to check it out.

Kyle: A Ski Trip to Japan in Style
Our executive editor, Kyle, also has his sights set on Japan with this bonus. But while I'm planning to head south to Kyoto, he's looking north – and eyeing one of the best ways to get to Japan to start the trip.
Just one flight in ANA's new “The Room” business class wasn't enough. I mean, just look at this. Can you blame me?

Read our full review of ANA's The Room business class from Chicago to Tokyo!
As luck would have it, my friend and I are hoping to head over to Japan next winter for a ski trip up in Hokkaido. Booking these flights would normally cost a small fortune: Think $20,000 or more in cash. And some airlines like United would charge you at least 170,000 miles or more for a roundtrip. This 80,000-point bonus opens up an even better avenue to get to Japan on points and miles.
I could book these new business class seats from San Francisco (SFO) to Tokyo-Haneda (HND) and back for just 90,000 points via Virgin Atlantic. While Virgin Atlantic recently raised award rates to book ANA first class , booking business class went untouched – it remains a stellar deal.

Read more on how to book ANA business and first class – and where you'll find these amazing seats!
Virgin is a Chase transfer partner , and Chase points normally transfer 1:1 to Virgin … but right now, it's even better. Through June 15, you can get a 30% bonus transferring Chase points to Virgin . That means I could transfer just 70,000 points to my Virgin Atlantic account to book these incredible flights to Japan!
With 10,000 points to spare, I could cover at least part of the cost of positioning flights out to San Francisco to make the transpacific flight to Tokyo … or maybe use the Chase travel portal to book flights from Tokyo up to Sapporo (CTS) in order to hit the slopes.

Jon: Roundtrip and Nonstop to Hawaii for Cheap
We don't need to tell you that 80,000 points from a single credit card is a big deal. It's so big, in fact, that you can book two roundtrip flights to Hawaii … and still have 10,000 points left over! You just have to do it right.
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points offer one of the cheapest ways to fly nonstop in economy to Hawaii. There's just one hitch: You're not using them to fly Virgin Atlantic, but its partner carrier Delta Air Lines. On Delta, you can fly from Minneapolis St. Paul (MSP) to Honolulu (HNL) for just 45,000 miles roundtrip… with minimal fees!
Since Virgin Atlantic is a Chase transfer partner and currently has a 30% bonus , you can book this for 35,000 miles roundtrip! And, that's exactly what our Thrifty Traveler Premium flight deal guru Jon would do.
My wife, Sarah, and I have been trying to sneak in a getaway to Hawaii for years. Using this big 80,000 point Chase bonus, we could easily fly from Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) to Honolulu (HNL) nonstop on Delta!
It's hard to believe we can do it this cheap. Paying cash, these flights would cost more than $1,100 apiece! And with the 30% transfer bonus, I'd only need to transfer 70,000 points from Chase to Virgin Atlantic to pull this off for two.

Gunnar: Nonstop, Roundtrip Delta Flights to Japan
Gunnar and Kyle on our team had the exact same idea. But Gunnar's got a different plan to get there.
For as long as I can remember, there's been a firm number one travel item on my bucket list: I want to go skiing in Japan in January.
Known around the skiing world as the legendary “Japanuary”, the first month of the year on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido is known for an endless barrage of snow, leading to the best skiing conditions on the planet every year. I've been watching Instagram videos and feature-length films devoted to skiing the deep powder snow that blankets that part of the country every January and I simply cannot take it anymore. I'm going in 2024.
And 80,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points were more than enough to get me there. Here's how.
Save for World of Hyatt, my favorite Chase transfer partner is Virgin Atlantic. I live in Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP), where there are no Virgin Atlantic flights at all, but Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points are perfect for booking nonstop Delta flights, of which there are many, many options out of Minneapolis.
The flight I've had my eyes on for years to tackle my bucket list item is the Minneapolis St. Paul (MSP) to Tokyo-Haneda (HND) nonstop flight. But if I wanted to book it using cash, it would cost me $2,693 in economy for the dates I want in January. Ouch…
And if I wanted to use Delta SkyMiles, it's still a painful proposition, even for just a Basic Economy fare that doesn't include seat assignment.

That's where Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points come in.

That's right. Your eyes do not deceive you. Virgin is charging half as many points as Delta is for the exact same flights! Plus, all Virgin Atlantic points bookings are in Main Cabin, meaning I got to choose my seats ahead of time, too.
My 80,000-point bonus from the Chase Sapphire Preferred card single-handedly knocked off the king of my bucket list, and I have 10,000 points to spare!

Peter: Two Stops in South America
Ready to take things to the next level with Chase points?
Our flight deal analyst and points and miles reporter, Peter, has big plans for putting this bonus to use on an incredible trip to South America later this year with one of the best ways to use United miles.
With 80,000 Chase points, I would book a multi-city “winter” escape down to South America. It’s one of my favorite places to visit and by utilizing Chase’s transfer partnership with United and United’s excursionist perk , I'd book the following itinerary to see both Peru and Colombia for just 40,000 United miles plus around $131 total in economy.

United's little-known Excursionist Perk allows you to tuck in a free one-way flight inside of a roundtrip reservation. That means the flight from Lima (LIM) to Bogota (BOG) on my trip doesn’t require any extra miles in this case since it’s booked as a stopover on the way back to his home airport of San Diego (SAN). That's right: I'm flying down to Lima, over to Bogota, and then back home from Colombia to San Diego for the same mileage as a simple roundtrip to Peru.
With 40,000 points remaining, I could book a few more flights within South America or hotels for his trip via the Chase travel portal .
Of course, I could also bring a friend to tag along and use the full 80,000-point bonus to fly a friend down to South America for a great 2-for-1 adventure. Paying cash for these flights would be almost $1,000 each, so it's a great value using Chase points. Flying business class with points is almost always a better value compared to the cash cost of a ticket, but if one sign-up bonus can fly two travelers in economy to see two destinations in South America and back, I’d say that’s a steal!

Allie: Business Class to Spain for Just 34K Points
With this big Chase bonus, our Senior Editor Allie plans to take her first business class flight to Europe using one of the  best deals in the world of points and miles .
It's flying to Madrid (MAD) in Iberia business class .

Here's how they'd pull it off.
While most airlines charge at least 60,000 miles (or much more) for a one-way business class ticket to Europe, we can fly Iberia business class for as low as 34,000 miles each way! It's not too good to be true: In fact, there are only a few hoops to jump through to make it happen:

You have to fly nonstop between Madrid (MAD) and select U.S. cities like Boston (BOS), New York City (JFK), Washington, D.C.-Dulles (IAD), and Chicago-O'Hare (ORD) to get this low rate.
You have to fly at the right time: These low, 34,000-mile rates are only available during off-peak periods – peak summer trips are pricier.
Your searches might still turn up blank, as you need to find the award availability to actually book these flights with your miles.

Since my partner and I are based in Minneapolis, we're opting for the nonstop flight between Chicago-O'Hare (ORD) and Madrid, Spain (MAD). And since March 2024 prices out as an off-peak period, they can book for just 34,000 points and $128 of taxes and fees each.
With 12,000 points to spare, we even have enough left over to help cover a positioning flight on the way there or part of a flight home.

Jackson: A Trip in the World's Best
As our credit cards and points & miles reporter Jackson put it, a bonus of 80,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards is more than enough to “live like the rich and famous for a day” – or at least a flight.
This isn't just any business class seat. It's Qatar Airways Qsuite , complete with a fully closing door, lie-flat bed, and top-notch food and drinks. I can't think of a better way to spend a hard-earned welcome offer than this!

Read more: Qatar QSuite Business Class Review
Qatar flies its QSuite business class all over the world, including several routes from the U.S. to Doha (DOH). But why stop there? I'd prefer to continue on from Doha to see another destination in the middle-east, like Dubai (DXB).

In order to make it happen, I'll need to transfer 77,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards to British Airways Avios and complete a partner booking. Since Chase points transfer instantly to British Airways , I shouldn't need to worry about award space disappearing while I wait. After completing the transfer, I'll have enough points to book my business class flight all the way from Chicago-O'Hare (ORD) to Dubai (DXB).
The total out-of-pocket cost for taxes and fees will run me a moderate $208.80. Not bad for 14-plus hours in the world's best business class – and a pit stop in the incredible Al Safwa First Class Lounge in Doha (DOH) before the final leg to Dubai.

I know this is cheating, but if I wanted to extend my impostor syndrome and feel like the rich and famous for an extra day, I might even pick up the  Chase Freedom Flex or Chase Freedom Unlimited®. This tandem of cards would allow me to quickly earn 100,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards and give me enough points to also book a night at the Park Hyatt Dubai.

Lauren: First Time to Dubai
Your bucket list doesn't stand a chance if you get this bonus of 80,000 points. Our social media manager, Lauren, is planning to put those points toward finally making it to Dubai, too.
I've always wanted to see Dubai and its stunning architecture. As a shopaholic and fashion aficionado, Dubai's luxury malls and haute couture are a must. And of course, since I'm a social media manager, I want to go to Dubai for the endless supply of Instagrammable spots like the Dubai Magical Garden and The Frame.

But getting to Dubai is expensive – it's not a trip I would take if not for this big bonus. I'm pretty new to the world of points and miles, so my co-workers encouraged me to keep things simple. And here's no easier way to take a flight and make it free than using the Chase travel portal.
Every point is worth 1.25 cents toward flights, so this 80,000-point bonus is worth at least $1,000 in travel. The cheaper the flight, the fewer points I need.
Lucky for me, I work for a flight deal company. I just got a  Thrifty Traveler Premium deal alert for flights to Dubai (DXB) as low as $751 roundtrip. That's like half the normal cost!

Get flight deals like this one from your home airport with Thrifty Traveler Premium !
Flights from nearby Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Dubai were a bit more expensive but still an amazing deal: I could book a trip this fall for just 69,500 Chase points! I'd still have points leftover to put toward another trip – or I might use some of those points to pop down to Abu Dhabi (AUH), maybe take a quad bike ride out in the Arabian desert.

Bottom Line
Clearly, we wouldn't have a hard time putting 80,000 points to use.
From business class flights to a luxurious hotel in Japan to taking a slew of cheap flights and making them free, there are a ton of options to get a lot of value out of this bonus on the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card . Our ideas are just the tip of the iceberg, so r ead more great ways to redeem this huge bonus!
Just remember, this limited-time offer to earn 80,000 points after spending $4,000 in the first three months ends on Thursday morning, May 25!
