9 Safety Tips for Women Traveling Alone

Hey, ladies! Planning on striking out on your own and experiencing the world? Amazing! Trust me, there’s nothing like solo travel to meet new people and live life on your terms. But, let’s face it, safety is always a concern. That’s why we’ve got some tips for you to keep secure on your journey. Don’t let fear hold you back – grab your backpack, hit the road, and don’t forget to read our safety tips below (they’re pretty useful for everyone, tbh).
Be a Local, Not a Tourist
Looking like a tourist can make you a prime target for pickpockets and thieves. Try to blend in by dressing like you live there and avoid standing in the middle of the street with a map. This will make it less obvious that you’re a tourist, and you’ll be less likely to attract unwanted attention.
Don’t Assume Your Fellow Countrymen Are Safe
If you’ve seen the headlines over the last week you may have heard about the two American ladies tricked by someone into doing a hike near Neuschwanstein Castle where the guy then attacked them. One died one lived. When traveling overseas, don’t assume that someone you meet (even if they come from your country) is going to be safe or honest. Unfortunately, people may take advantage of the shared cultural identity or imagined friendship.
Ask the Locals
Always ask hotel staff and taxi drivers if there are any dangerous areas around where you’re staying. The U.S. is known for having very localized unsafe areas, so it’s crucial to know what areas to avoid. No matter where you are, always ask the locals about known dangers, and believe what they tell you.
Hide Your Belongings
Keep most of your money, vital documents, and cards in a pouch or a belt worn under your clothes. Handbags and shoulder bags are prime targets for thieves and pickpockets. Make sure your money and important documents are out of reach and hidden under your clothes. Also, keep a small amount of money in your bag for emergencies.
Stay Alert
Stay alert, but there’s no need to get over-anxious. Remember, you’re probably just as safe where you are traveling as you were at home, so don’t attract attention to yourself by looking anxious or frightened. Instead, embrace your new surroundings. Take ordinary, sensible precautions such as not walking down dark alleys alone at night, as you would at home.
Remember, most attackers in the street, whether attacking men or women, are after money. In most cases, they will go for the bag and its contents, and you will get away free if you throw the bag down and run as fast as you can in the opposite direction.
Watch Your Drinks
Sit at the bar where you can see your drink being made and don’t accept free drinks from strangers. These days there are three or four types of “date-rape” drugs. Take it a step further by wearing these special nails that can detect drugs in a drink.
Keep Your Hair Up
If you have long hair, it’s best to wear it up and not in a pigtail. Long hair can be an easy grab for someone trying to attack you from behind. Be safe and keep your hair tied up in a bun or a clip.
Wear Good Shoes
Next, wear comfortable shoes that you can walk in all day without discomfort. Most of the time, when you are traveling, you will be doing a lot of walking. It makes sense to wear comfortable, flat-soled shoes or boots that you can run in if you need to. Ladies, I know it is tempting to throw in those high fashion shoes, but trust me; they are not practical when traveling alone.
Keep in Touch
Lastly, keep in touch with your family and friends while you are traveling alone. Always make sure someone knows where you are and where you are heading next. There are so many ways to stay connected; don’t forget to share your amazing new experiences with someone and let them know what you’re up to!
Follow these tips to stay safe while traveling solo . By being aware of your surroundings and taking necessary precautions, you can focus on the amazing experiences and memories that await you on your solo adventure. Safe travels!
