Wander With Wonder - Discovering Wow Moments Around the World or Across the Street
Hundreds of historic Sunday Houses are accommodations for visitors to Fredericksburg, TX. Read on to find a charming inn to suit your vacation needs.
I approached one of Fredericksburg’s accommodations, a tiny Sunday House with pale yellow siding, white trim, and a tin roof. The front door prominently displayed under a small overhang, beckoned for me to enter. It opened into a compact living room with mustard-colored walls and antique wood furnishings. A small couch and coffee table filled much of the cozy space. German beer steins and figurines decorated a massive cabinet.
Beyond the wide archway, a pastel quilt accentuated the white, wrought iron bed, snugly between two side tables. Nearby, the compact full bath felt bright and cheerful. Country-inspired décor filled the small kitchen, where a well-wrapped plate of morning pastries awaited. A hammock and two lawn chairs overlooked the river beyond a back deck and picnic table.

That was a decade ago. But staying in Fredericksburg   Sunday Houses remains a wildly popular accommodation option in the Texas Hill Country.
These Tiny Homes Reflect a Storied Past
From the late 1800s into the 1920s, German farming families in the Fredericksburg area maintained these miniature homes for use during short stays in town. Owning a Sunday House facilitated access to weekend markets, Sunday worship, special events, and other business responsibilities. However, as automobiles became more popular, day trips replaced weekend journeys, reducing the need for Sunday Houses. Simultaneously, some retiring farmers moved into these tiny homes full-time.
More recently, hundreds of remaining Sunday Houses have become homey visitor accommodations available all week. Often situated within blocks of local restaurants, shops, and churches, there are homes for multiple tastes and group sizes. Surround yourself with antique flagstone and pecan trees, or enjoy a rocker on your private front porch.
