Delta Air Lines and Boeing announced the carrier is acquiring 100 737-10 jetliners, members of the 737 Max family, with an option to purchase an additional 30 more in the future.
The order is valued at $13.5 billion, although airlines typically get discounts from list prices in such quantity.
The move is Delta’s first order for new Boeing aircraft in over a decade.
In a statement, Delta said the order would “modernize its single-aisle fleet” with aircraft that are 20% to 30% more fuel efficient on a per seat basis.
The beleaguered 737 Max was grounded for over 18 months following the second of two fatal hull losses in 2018 and 2019 that together resulted in the deaths of 346 people.
The United States lifted the grounding in 2020.
