Delta Inches Towards Offering Free Wi-Fi on Mainline Flights

Using Delta in-flight Wi-FI
Delta Air Lines is moving towards offering its passengers complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi service, according to an internal memorandum viewed by Frequent Business Traveler.
The carrier, which announced in January 2021 plans to upgrade its Wi-Fi offering to provide “reliable and fast connectivity” while in flight and also conducted tests of a free service on a limited number of flights, now plans to “soon launch complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi service on its domestic mainline routes,” although it will not offer free service on regional-jet service.
The airline has yet to announce whether it will offer a basic free service and charge for premium speeds or whether the entire system will be complimentary.
“By equipping our fleet with enhanced Wi-Fi capabilities, we are taking steps to ensure we can adapt to the different ways our customers will use technology during their journey both today and in the future,” said Byron Merritt, the airline’s vice president of brand experience, in 2021 at the time the initial plans, which included service using new high-speed Ka-band satellite service powered by ViaSat for its narrow-body fleet, which includes Airbus A321neos, Boeing 737-900ERs, and Boeing 757-200s.
Delta also operates over 30% of its flights using regional carrier partners including SkyWest and Endeavor Air.  The aircraft used for its regional flights have not been slated for an upgrade to satellite service and still use air-to-ground in-flight Wi-Fi services such as that from Gogo.
