United Airlines said it had paid $10 million as a deposit for its previous order for electric air taxis. The deposit covers 100 of the flying machines, which have vertical takeoff and landing capabilities.
The Chicago-based airline last year agreed to order up to 200 of the flying taxis with an eye towards having the ability to ferry passengers to and from the airport with minimal environmental impact.
United will be the launch customer for the four-seater electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle, or eVTOL, which Archer is currently developing. Yet to be mass-produced and dubbed, Maker, the eVTOL is currently undergoing flight testing and will be able to travel for up to 60 miles (96 kilometers) on a single charge at speeds of 150 mph (245 km/h).
The deal is worth $1 billion and United has an option to purchase an additional $500 million worth of the aircraft.
