Travel Insurance for Children with Disabilities

Are you considering a family summer vacation? Whether you and your family are travelling abroad or within Canada outside your home province , you’ll want to know you’re protected. Through our partnership with Easter Seals Canada, we continue to recognize and learn the importance of having comprehensive coverage when travelling with family, including those with children with disabilities.

We’ve put together this blog, to discuss travel insurance options for families of children with disabilities, to help make the planning a bit easier.

Key Travel Insurance Definitions for families of children with disabilities

If you’re considering purchasing travel insurance for your family, be sure to check your insurance provider’s definitions of “ Family” and “Dependent children” . With our Family and Friends travel insurance plan, we cover two adults and up to 6 dependent children or grandchildren of any age living with a cognitive, developmental, or physical disability.

Here are the full definitions of both terms from our Traveller policy wording:

“Family member” is defined as:

(Whether by birth, adoption or marriage) your legal or common-law spouse, parents, step-parents, brothers, sisters, fathers-in-law, mothers-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, natural or adopted children, stepchildren, stepbrothers or stepsisters, grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, foster children or any individual of whom you are a legal guardian.

“Dependent children” are defined as:

Unmarried children who are dependent on a parent or guardian and are:

Up to and including 21 years, if they are living with their parent or guardian; or,

Up to and including 25 years, if they are attending an educational institution full-time, whether or not they are residing with their parent or guardian; or,

Any age, if they have a cognitive, developmental, or physical disability, whether or not they are living with their parent or guardian.
