Phoenicia Malta—Mediterranean Luxury Defined

Wander With Wonder - Discovering Wow Moments Around the World or Across the Street
Phoenicia Malta defines Mediterranean luxury. From the red carpet entrance to the lush gardens, you are immersed in Mediterranean luxury.
Our Mediterranean luxury began with dense shade trees lining the path to Phoenicia Malta’s entrance. As we walked up the wide stairs covered with red carpet, the noise of Valletta and Floriana faded into the background. The summer heat seemed lightyears away when we received a warm smile and a genuine greeting.
Colossal brass and glass doors opened to an oasis of cool and calm. A relaxed, quiet elegance engulfed us. Our bags were whisked away. We were expected. Our room was prepared. A chilled glass of bubbly in the reception lounge made our arrival an occasion.

A Royal Retreat
Yes, it’s true— Phoenicia Malta has welcomed royalty over its 75 years in operation. But not just members of royal families have been guests at this prestigious hotel—presidents, heads of state, celebrities, and discerning travelers seeking the finest in Mediterranean luxury have also been drawn to its opulent surroundings.
Located in Floriana, just outside the beautiful city of Valletta, Phoenicia Malta offers guests an experience of Mediterranean luxury that is truly unparalleled.

A Luxury Mediterranean Landmark
Phoenicia Malta wasn’t always a five-star hotel. In 1902, there was a plan to build an elegant hotel on the Bastion Parade Grounds outside the walls of Valletta. It took longer than expected because of planning, politics, and two world wars. Finally, in 1935, Lord and Lady Strickland began building the hotel.
Then World War II happened. The hotel wasn’t finished. The Royal Air Force took over the unfinished building for their personnel to use on leave. Unfortunately, the property was heavily bombed during the war. Rebuilding was a challenge due to a shortage of materials and labor.
But in 1947, the hotel was finally finished and opened to the public. Guests from all over the world came to Phoenicia to enjoy a luxurious Mediterranean vacation or conduct business.

Classic Architecture Inside and Out
The architecture is a perfect mix of traditional Maltese style and classic features. The landmark hotel, designed by William Binnie, a Scottish architect, is made entirely of Maltese limestone.
The interior is as stunning as the exterior, blending classic colonial and modern European décor and furnishings. The bathrooms are especially impressive, with Italian marble used extensively, giving them a spa-like feel.
The doors, windows, and ceilings are all adorned with intricate plaster moldings and decorative elements, which showcase the incredible craftsmanship that went into creating this masterpiece. It indeed is an unforgettable experience.

Mediterranean Luxury Guest Rooms
We enjoyed staying in a beautiful suite with a lounge and beverage center. The bedroom was magnificent, with a king-sized bed that felt like a cloud and pillows that were a dream come true for a pillow enthusiast like me.

The breathtaking view of Valletta and the Grand Harbor from the bedroom was unforgettable. The Italian marble bathroom was also stunning and had a view of Valletta, which was a first for me.
The rain shower was perfect for cooling off after exploring the city, and the thick and luxurious bath sheets, robes, and slippers made sitting on the balcony and watching the world go by an even more delightful experience.

One of my favorite moments was enjoying morning tea in bed while watching a cruise ship enter the harbor and observing the bustling activity of Pjazza Tritoni.

Mediterranean Luxury Poolside
The Bastion Pool sits below the Phoenicia Gardens. The infinity pool is stunning, with a breathtaking view of the yacht basin and Valletta Bastions. You can spend hours lounging under an umbrella or in a cabana, immersing in the beautiful surroundings and soaking up the Mediterranean sun. If you get thirsty or hungry, don’t worry—poolside service is available for lunch, dinner, snacks, and drinks. It’s the perfect spot to relax and unwind.

Mediterranean Food and Libations
Dining at the Phoenicia poolside or in the elegant Phoenix is a cherished experience. Traditional Maltese and European dishes are prepared from ingredients gleaned from local and international markets. Served with an appeal to your eyes and palette, a light bite or five-course dinner is available for every taste.
Phoenix Restaurant and Terrace
As you enter the Phoenix , your eyes will immediately be drawn to the stunning coffered ceilings. The blend of colonial-style decor and Maltese design elements creates a time-honored yet modern ambiance that is truly breathtaking.
One of my favorite aspects of the dining room is the carefully chosen blooms and greens that enhance the lavish atmosphere. Fresh flowers provide a luxurious touch of nature that adds to the overall beauty of Phoenix.

Don’t forget to go to the terrace, where you’ll be captivated by the surrounding views, day or night. You will have a “secret view” of Valletta’s Bastions, with the city’s walls and distant yacht harbor in sight.
The Art Deco terrace is the perfect setting for any meal, but dinner there is wildly romantic. The gardens are illuminated, and the twinkling lights of villages across the harbor create a spellbinding ambiance. If you’re lucky, you may even enjoy fireworks from the terrace.

This elegant atmosphere offers exceptional European cuisine and flawless service, making you feel like royalty. A specialty of the Phoenix is Champagne, offering daily champagne breakfasts and sparkling weekend brunches.

However, the Barons de Rothschild Champagne Dinners is any season’s most extravagant wine-and-dining event. Each course perfectly pairs with Baron de Rothschild Champagne, making it an unforgettable experience. If you happen to be at the Phoenix when this sparkling evening is planned, don’t miss the chance to attend. The candlelit room, fine wine, sumptuous food, and gracious service will make for an unforgettable evening with captivating dinner companions from around the globe.
Palm Court
For a relaxing break during your sightseeing adventures or a cozy spot for afternoon tea or after-dinner coffee, the Palm Court Lounge is ideal. Situated in the hotel’s heart, Palm Court is conveniently located on your way to Phoenix Restaurant and Terrace.
Sink into one of the comfortable sofas or chairs and indulge in a decadent afternoon tea featuring small sandwiches, pastries, scones with clotted cream, and strawberry preserves.
With over fourteen loose-leaf teas, you will find the perfect brew to suit your tastes. For an extra luxurious touch, add a glass of Champagne to your tea service and make your experience at Palm Court genuinely unforgettable.

Bastion Pool Bar and Restaurant
The Bastion Pool Bar and Restaurant is located poolside below the gardens and is excellent for dining and enjoying drinks while viewing Valletta’s impressive Bastions and the yacht basin.
The menu changes seasonally. This summer, bar-b-q, sushi, and handmade ice cream were featured. During certain times of the year, it can also be a popular spot for nightlife, with live jazz or trendy DJs providing music for your listening pleasure.

Club Bar
The Club Bar is a time machine transporting you to a bygone era. The atmosphere is reminiscent of the 1940s and 1950s when RAF personnel would come to Phoenicia Malta to unwind during leave.
The cocktails served here are a perfect mix of modern and classic. The lounge is cozy and comfortable. The photo gallery of past guests will take you on a Phoenicia history tour while enjoying your drink.

Beefbar in the City
Beefbar in the City is an ideal spot for meat lovers as it offers a wide variety of the finest cuts of beef. However, if you prefer fish or vegetables, their menu also includes a selection of mouthwatering options known as “Beef, Reef, and Leaf.”
Moreover, you can relish the stunning view from the terrace, which overlooks Triton Fountain and the beautiful plaza. It’s a great place to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the city while savoring a glass of local wine, nibbling on a beef kabob, or indulging in a tender and juicy steak.

Phoenicia’s Art Collection
As you walk through the corridors, restaurants, and lounges of Phoenicia Malta, you can’t help but feel like you are in a gallery. Paintings, sculptures, and antiques are everywhere inside and outside the building.
Works from old-school masters to avant-garde experimenters are a feast for the eyes. Even more impressive is that the Phoenicia hosts local and international artists in residence, and they curate changing exhibits several times per year. It’s impressive to see so much art in one place. Take your time and experience it all.

The Outstanding Staff
Phoenicia’s greatest asset is its staff. The team comprises professionals from different countries who prioritize every guest’s comfort, safety, and satisfaction. You will receive assistance with a smile and the staff is genuinely interested in your needs.
Every staff member is friendly and upbeat no matter what duties they perform. After meeting the General Manager, Robyn Pratt, I understood why the staff is so happy, professional, and engaged. Robyn is a great leader and mentor; she enables the team to provide dedicated and personalized service to every guest.
