Johannesburg Botanical Garden
Discover the beauty of the Johannesburg Botanical Garden, a sprawling 81-hectare oasis that dates back to 1866. Located in the suburb of Emmarentia, it’s one of Johannesburg’s most important green lungs and a great place to explore nature without breaking the bank.
The lush gardens were initially created as a rose garden in 1964 and have since grown to cover an impressive 125 hectares. Managed by Johannesburg City Parks, there’s no entrance fee required, making it a great, affordable outing for the whole family.
Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden
The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, formerly known as the Witwatersrand National Botanical Garden, has been a beacon of beauty for many decades. Spanning 300 hectares (3.0 km2) in western Roodepoort near Johannesburg, this botanical reserve is a must-see destination for anyone seeking a truly unique and unforgettable experience.
It features a succulent rockery garden, cycad garden, water garden, fern trail, arboretum, geological garden, People’s Plant Garden, birds and butterfly garden, dell section, waterwise garden, children’s garden, a wildflower area, and visitors’ information center. To top it off, the Garden also boasts a restaurant, gift shop, and bird hide overlooking a small dam.
Until March 2015, it also had a nursery that cultivated native South African plants. With so much to offer, it is no surprise that the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden has been recognized as one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world.
Melville Koppies Nature Reserve
Explore the beauty of Melville Koppies, a Johannesburg City Heritage Site and nature reserve in South Africa. The word ‘koppie’ translates to ‘small hill’, and Iron Age artefacts can still be found at the site. Enjoy a leisurely walk or hike in the Koppies and take in the sights and sounds of the natural outdoors.
Tours are available for those who want to learn more about the area and its history. And don’t forget to bring your pup along for the adventure! The Koppies East is open daily from dusk till dawn and is the perfect distance for your daily step count, measuring about 1km in length. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to explore the Johannesburg Botanical Garden, located just next door.
Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve
Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve is a 640-hectare (1,600-acre) haven of natural beauty located 11 kilometers (6.8 mi) south of Johannesburg. This free-of-charge sanctuary of veld and koppies (hills) is home to a variety of flora and bird life, as well as large and small mammals such as blesbok, zebra, wildebeest, and duiker.
The reserve is underlain by rocks of the Klipriversberg formation of the Ventersdorp system, which are Basalt and Andesite – volcanic rocks. To the north of the reserve lie the quartzites and conglomerates of the upper Witwatersrand system which dip underneath the lavas. Unfortunately, no pets are allowed; however, visitors can explore the reserve’s numerous hiking trails and archaeological sites, with the Bloubosspruit flowing through the area.
Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve is the perfect destination for nature enthusiasts and those seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
