Yes, we, residents of Palm Springs, California , endured the summer temperatures reaching over 110 on numerous days. We have learned how to handle the heat and know it is a matter of waiting it out. Soon, we will again be able to walk out and marvel at the beauty of the San Joaquin mountain range and start hosting poolside happy hours. A winter getaway to Palm Springs is the best time to explore this Southern California desert community.
What is Winter in Palm Springs?
In Coachella Valley (composed of nine communities), we do not pay much attention to the seasons listed on the calendar. Instead, we refer to “The Season,” when the Valley fills with visitors worldwide. With 13 direct flights to our Palm Spring International Airport, there is easy access to our community from all over the United States and worldwide.
The Season for restaurants and hotels typically begins around the first of September. They used their time off during the summer for a real vacation or used the time to upgrade their venues. We, residents, delight in walking into a restaurant before the onslaught of visitors typically starts at the beginning of October.
1. Modernism Week in October Showcases Modernism Architecture
Frankly, as a resident of Palm Springs, it is impossible not to be caught up in Modernism Week’s excitement. We, locals, welcome the opportunity to peek into some of the historic architectural homes of the 50s and 60s. We often dress in elegant clothes and attend cocktail parties that spill into the yards of these magnificently preserved homes.
There are two periods for Modernism Week —October and February. While October has fewer events, there is still plenty to see. Plus, it is much less crowded at the events, and much easier to get a reservation at your favorite restaurant.
Pro Tip : Sign up for the Modernism Week newsletter. Then you will be one of the first to be notified when tickets go on sale so you can grab one before the event sells out.

2. Retail Stores are Filled to the Brim
During the summer, retailers with quieter days assess their inventory. Many of them travel to tradeshows to discover the latest trends. Most of our Palm Springs stores are independently owned, so their closeness to their customers enables them to talk with and hear what kinds of items they are looking for while visiting.
You will find clothing and jewelry with a splurge of glitz at Kimball’s across from the Hyatt. Are you looking for some souvenirs? You will want to head to PSP Destination. Need a gift for a spiritual person? You can’t go wrong at Crystal Fantasy.

3. Concerts in Palm Springs Public Parks
A place to meet the locals is at our downtown park’s concerts. Our new park, with the statue of Marilyn marking the entrance, has become a gathering place for tribute concerts. You will want to grab a bite to eat from a nearby restaurant to enjoy while sitting under our beautiful, dark, star-filled sky. Another option is to make a reservation for dinner after the crowds disperse.

4. Starlit Swims
If you haven’t experienced it, here is the place to have a night-time swim. The nights are quiet, the sky filled with stars, and the gentle feel of the perfectly heated pool helps you feel like you have died and gone to paradise.
After you swim, head to the hot tub with your favorite beverage. If your phone is nearby, it is not a bad time to take a selfie and send it to your friends hunkering in cold winter communities.

5. Palm Springs Art Museum
Located on Museum Way, the Palm Springs Art Museum will surprise you. It has a sculpture garden and an interior with light wooden floors, serving as the perfect backdrop for the art displayed throughout the spacious building.
The museum showcases local artists, our historic Western art, and curated art exhibits with artists from the United States and worldwide.
Pro Tip :  Thanks to the City of Palm Springs, you can go to the museum with no admittance fee from 5 to 8 pm on Thursdays.
6. Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center
At the end of the shopping district on Palm Canyon sits the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center . Due to its location, visitors often miss it.
Formerly a bank designed by Stewart Williams, a renowned Modernism architect, this building was repurposed and maintained the early-60s charm of the original design. The bank vault has been integrated into the gift shop. They have revolving architectural-focused exhibits.
On the sidewalk, in front of the museum, are the stars of the famous architects who originated the Modernism style , now highly praised by people worldwide for their innovative approach to architectural design in the 50s and 60s.

7. Palm Springs Air Museum
Visitors can explore planes from World War II fighters and bombers at the Palm Springs Air Museum . Each aircraft is meticulously maintained and accompanied by informative exhibits showing their historical significance. The museum not only preserves the legacy of aviation but also honors the brave individuals who have contributed to the advancement of aeronautics. Its captivating displays and immersive atmosphere make it a must-visit destination for aviation enthusiasts and history buffs.

8. Dining Delights in Palm Springs Restaurants
Embracing the alfresco charm, we relish dining under the vast expanse of our stunning skies. The culinary landscape sees the emergence of new restaurants, each unveiling unique decor and delectable cuisine, enhancing our gourmet experiences.
Pro Tip : If you have a favorite restaurant, make your reservation before you arrive to ensure you will not be disappointed.

9. Palm Springs Aerial Tramway
If you have never been to Palm Springs, you will want to head to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway , the world’s largest rotating aerial tramway. It takes you from the desert floor to 8,516 feet near the peak of San Jacinto Mountain.

At the top, there are trails to hike. In winter, you can expect to find snow. Thus, the restaurants at the top of the tram will be happy to serve you hot chocolate or another beverage of your choice and food from pizza to fine dining.
Pro Tip : It is at least 25 degrees cooler at the top of the mountain. So don’t be fooled by the warmer temperatures in Palm Springs—take layers with you on the tramway.
