Apple released updates of its mobile operating system for its iPhones, iPads, and smart watches on Thursday intended to fix some major issues that the company had yet to swat since the launch of the latest version of iOS.
While Apple considers x.x.1 releases as minor updates, some of the fixes are fairly substantial.
The Cupertino-based computer and tech company released iOS 17.1.1 and iPadOS 17.1.1, coming roughly two weeks after Apple released iOS 17.1, itself an update of the iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 operating systems that came out in mid-September.
The 17.1 release introduced new AirDrop, Standby, and Apple Music features.
The iOS 17.1.1 update fixed a major wireless charging problem wherein some wireless charging docks in current BMW models were bricking the NFC chip embedded in the iPhone 15, causing Apple Pay and other NFC features to fail.  An internal Apple memorandum said that the issue is affecting a “small number” of BMW wireless chargers, although that did not indicate it was a small number of BMW customers.
“In rare circumstances, Apple Pay and other NFC features may become unavailable on iPhone 15 models after wireless charging in certain cars,” Apple had said.
The update also fixed a bug with the Weather Lock Screen widget.
In addition, Apple released WatchOS 10.1.1, an update to the watchOS 10.1 update that came out some two weeks ago, introducing Double Tap and NameDrop support. WatchOS 10 was first released in September of this year.
The update to WatchOS fixes a bug that caused some Apple Watch models to drain their batteries faster than they should and an issue that resulted in tens of thousands of consumer complaints.
“This update provides important bug fixes and addresses an issue that could cause the battery to drain more quickly for some users,” Apple said in its typically restrained manner, without admitting any fault.
