Manhattan Theatre Club to Stream Final Week of ‘Jaja’s African Hair Braiding’

For those who can’t make it to Broadway, the Manhattan Theatre Club will bring Broadway to people’s living rooms this month.  “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding” will be available via livestream from the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre for its final week of performances.
The new Jocelyn Bioh play had its world premiere at the theater on October 3 of this year and is currently playing to a sold-out crowd. It was the first production of Manhattan Theatre Club’s 2023-2024 Broadway season at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.
FBT’s chief theater critic, Jonathan Spira, reviewed the show, comparing it to the hit 1980s television sitcom “Cheers”
“The 1980s television program “Cheers” was not really about beer and wine, nor was it about the bar which carried the name “Cheers,” Spira wrote.  “Rather, it was about the people who, like Dr. Otternschlag in the movie “Grand Hotel,” more or less lived a good part of their daily lives there.”
Spira went on to say that “ Jaja’s is a melting pot where everyone knows your name, as immigrants from West Africa navigate the daily rituals of working in or patronizing a Harlem salon while in the midst of change in their cultural environment,” stopping only to warn, “Just don’t expect Sam or Diane to show up.”
The Manhattan Theatre Club is working with the League of Live Stream Theater to bring “Jaja’s” into people’s homes.  Tickets are available online at the MTC website.
