The Thanksgiving holiday travel season got underway in full force as millions of travelers hit the sometimes friendly skies and the well-traveled road.
The result was that Wednesday was the busiest travel day since the start of the pandemic put the tradition of visiting friends and family on hiatus.
A cross-country storm brought strong winds and heavy rain to much of the Eastern United States on Tuesday and, although it moved offshore by Wednesday, it did leave its mark.
Flight delays were significant.  On Tuesday, some 5,522 flights within, into, and departing the United States were delayed according to statistics from FlightAware, a service that tracks such information.  Even with all of the delays, there were only 72 flight cancellations.
The picture was just slightly better on Wednesday, when 4,071 flights were delayed with an additional 67 cancellations.
On Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, which is generally an excellent day to travel, there had been only 771 flight delays with an additional 27 cancellations.
