10 Best Family Day Trips from Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville, Tennessee is bursting with live music and entertainment, family-friendly activities, great food, and outdoor adventures. However, Music City is also a short drive away from surrounding small towns that make great day trips from Nashville and show off an authentic and fun slice of Tennessee. Through their outdoor attractions, restaurants, museums, fun things to do, and yes, music, these Nashville day trips can create wonderful memories for locals or visitors. 



The following list of day trips are located under a two-hour drive from Nashville’s downtown and can easily be visited in a day, but they could also be great weekend getaway destinations if you wanted to stay overnight.

Franklin, TN

Approximate Driving Time from Nashville:  30 minutes



Located in close proximity to Nashville in Middle Tennessee, Franklin is a perfect day trip to escape from the big city. Franklin oozes classic Americana and Southern charm and is rich with civil war history, country music legends, and spaces to play and explore. There are also farms speckled throughout Franklin where you can pick flowers or cuddle with alpacas, among other things.



Favorite things to do in Franklin:




Explore the shops and restaurants along Main Street and in downtown Franklin Square (they also have seasonal festivals here)

Leiper’s Fork, TN

Leipers Fork is an unincorporated town (technically part of the city of Franklin) full of artist galleries and boutiques, with a few great family-friendly restaurants sprinkled in the mix.  The original Puckett’s is a must, as well as Leiper’s Fork Distillery for the grown-ups. Leiper’s Fork is also located right off the Natchez Trace Parkway, which is popular for road trips and makes for an especially beautiful scenic drive from Nashville.

Bowling Green is about an hour north of Nashville just over the border in Kentucky. This small, quaint southern town has plenty to do and discover during a day trip from Nashville. Plus, Western Kentucky University sits atop a hill over the city and is lovely to explore…or catch a college baseball or basketball game if you time it right.

Cummins Falls, TN

Cummins Falls is a waterfall on the Blackburn Fork River and is located in southern Jackson County, Tennessee, East of Nashville. By volume, it is the eighth-largest waterfall in Tennessee. A family-friendly hike to the falls where you can cool off in the water and swim under the falls makes an awesome outdoor day trip. After, be sure to stop at the Old Mill General Store for ice cream and snacks. You can sit on the rocking chairs to rest before heading back to Nashville.
