Northern Sweden and Finland are experiencing record-low temperatures with heavy snow, while devastating flooding is hitting the United Kingdom and northern France.
Kvikkjokk-Årrenjarka recorded -46° F (-43.6° C) on Wednesday, the lowest temperature in that location since recordkeeping began in 1887, Sverker Hellström, a meteorologist at the Sveriges meteorologiska och hydrologiska institut, told FBT.
In Sweden and Finland, the weather is causing chaos on the roads. The news agency Reuters reported that, on Thursday, rescue crews had to evacuate hundreds of people who had been trapped overnight in their autos.
Meanwhile, temperatures in Enontekiö, a city in the far northwest of Finland, temperatures dropped to -44.3° F (-42.4° C), the lowest temperature to be recorded in the country since 2006.
In the United Kingdom, a powerful storm late Thursday brought heavy bands of rain that resulted in the issuance of hundreds of flood warnings and greatly disrupted travel there.
Nearly 300 flood warnings were in place across England on Friday morning from the Midlands to the southern and eastern coasts.
In London, approximately 50 people were evacuated from rising waters. Heavy rain brought similar scenes to parts of France and Germany.
Fire services and local government officials in France, meanwhile, said they had conducted at least 700 evacuations from flooding conditions in recent days and, in Germany, the Bundeswehr was deployed to help reinforce dikes against rising floodwaters.
