One of the most stressful aspects of flying as a plus-size person is the need for more space in the economy space, right? Not only can it be extremely expensive to get that extra seat, but the airlines often make it feel as though you’ve to jump through hoops to do it. It can be frustrating and annoying to get the space that you want on a flight. During my time travelling, I’ve had to find ways to boost my odds of securing an empty seat next to me. More often that not I’m successful so I would like to share some of the tips on how to get an extra seat whilst flying.
Look For Neighbour-Free Seating And Customer Of Size Policies
This is the one option that you can do before you travel to help you heighten the chance of securing an empty seat next to you. Many airlines now do this and I have another post that goes into a lot more detail about these customer of size policies . These allow you to be able to reserve the seat next to you for a small fee. It is usually opened a few days before you travel. However, it’s not always guaranteed, so if they sell the seats or the flight is full you will be refunded the money instead.
Ask At Check In If There Are Any Extra Seats
The next thing that should be done is to ask at the check-in. There may be some seats that have empty seats next to them. All you need to do is ask them if it is possible to be moved to a seat that has an empty neighbouring seat. This should be free of charge to do.
Ask At The Gate For Any Empty Seats
If you inquire at the gate, someone will be able to tell you if the seat next to you is free and reprint you a boarding pass with a new seat if needed. I tend to ask at the gate before boarding starts. If the airline staff are already at the gate, you could ask them before you sit down and wait for boarding. This way you’re not doing it in front of everyone when they are busy checking boarding passes.
