Adventures Await: Navigating Weight Limits for Plus Size Travellers

If you’re anything like me, wanderlust beckons you to explore all of the hidden corners of the world, but for us plus-size travelers, a shadow of uncertainty can lurk: will there be weight restrictions on the activities we long to experience?



Fear not, adventurers! With a little research and a dash of resourcefulness, you can transform that shadow into a springboard for discovering inclusive experiences.



Here’s my guide to navigating weight limits for plus size travellers:













Uncovering the Limits:




Ask Directly:  Contact activity organisers via email or phone. Don’t shy away – they’re there to answer questions. I find it easier to be upfront and mention my size, even sending photos of what I look like to avoid ambiguity.



Scour the Website:  Dive deep into the fine print! Look for dedicated sections on safety policies or FAQs mentioning weight restrictions. If they have a search bar, try that too! While most websites don’t list weight limits, you may strike gold!



Reviews are Golden:  Fellow travellers, especially plus size ones, can be your best allies. Search online reviews for references to weight limits or size inclusivity of specific activities.



Consult Social Media:  Contact activity providers on Instagram or Facebook, asking about their size policies. Often, social media managers are more responsive than traditional channels. You may also be able to look through their social media posts to see if you see anyone that looks like you.




Beyond the Numbers:



Now, let’s say the dreaded weight limit looms. Don’t despair! Here are your options:




Alternative Activities:  Seek similar experiences without restrictions. Hike a nature trail instead of zip lining, or explore feel the thrill of the Bali swings instead of bungee jumping. Embrace the unexpected!



Customisation is Key:  Ask organisers if they offer any other experiences with equipment or adaptations suitable for your size. Remember, a little proactive communication can go a long way.



Advocate for Change:  Politely share your feedback with activity providers about the lack of inclusivity. Suggesting alternative solutions can pave the way for future travellers of all sizes and if they see there is demand for it, they’re more likely to change.



Celebrate Yourself:  Remember, your worth isn’t defined by a number on a scale. Travel is about enriching your soul, not fitting into someone else’s mold. Celebrate your unique body and the joy of exploration!
