Things To Consider Before Booking A Spa Trip If You’re Plus Size

Spas are usually a haven of tranquility, pampering and bliss but for us lovely plus size folk, the spa experience can sometimes be less than… well, serene.

Fear not, besties! I have been to LOTS of different spas and spent the time picking up all the tips and tricks you need for the best possible experience. It was a hard job, I promise .

I’ve learnt that with a little planning and insider knowledge, your spa day can be just as magical as anyone else’s. So, grab your favourite robe (because let’s be honest, regular spa robes are about as useful as a chocolate teapot) and let’s dive into the world of relaxation and comfort.

Things To Consider Before Booking A Spa Trip If You’re Plus Size

1. Size Matters (Especially When It Comes to Tables and Baths):

Massage Tables: Not all massage tables are created equal. Although most beds are sturdy enough, it’s best to be sure before you book. Check the imagery on their website and if you’re still unsure, call ahead and inquire about wider tables or reinforced options. After all, you deserve to melt into that massage, not worry about structural integrity! Tip: if you realise the tables are too small once you arrive, you can ask them to put two together for a little bit of extra space.

Baths: If you’re booking a treatment that includes a bath of some sort, opt for a spa with larger soaking tubs or whirlpool baths that can accommodate your curves comfortably. Again, looking at imagery online is a good way to get a feel for the size of the bath, especially if you see other plus size people using it in social media tags.

2. Shower Power:

Space:  Occasionally, you may find that you need to use a shower during your treatment. Cramming into a tiny shower stall is no one’s idea of a good time and so it’s worth looking for spas with larger showers that offer ample room to move about. Bonus points if they have grab bars and detachable shower heads for extra stability and flexibility.

3. Know Your Needs (and Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Modifications):

Accessibility:  If you have mobility limitations, consider speaking to the spa in advance about any adaptations that may need to be made.

Specific Treatments:  Certain treatments might require adjustments for plus-size bodies. Discuss your needs with the spa beforehand to ensure they can accommodate you, or do your research about the treatment beforehand so you can arrive prepared. Remember, a good spa should always make you feel comfortable and welcome, regardless of your size.

Set Boundaries: Consider the places you may not want to be touched during your treatment and when you get a chance, let your spa therapist know. They’ll avoid anywhere, whether that’s your stomach or your legs.

4. Pack Like a Pro:

Bring Your Own Robe:  Standard spa robes are notorious for being, well, shall we say, “generously snug” on curvier figures. If you’re able to, pack your own comfy robe that makes you feel confident and beautiful. If you’re travelling and can’t pack one as it takes up too much space, try asking if there’s anything else you can use. I’ve had spas make makeshift robes out of sheets etc

Underwear That Wows:  Ditch the disposable paper triangles that massage therapists hand out and rock some your own comfy underwear that won’t dig or pinch during treatments. If you’re feeling it, you don’t have to wear any at all.

Flip-Flops with Flair:  Save yourself from the squeezing into spa slippers and bring your own stylish (and hygienic) footwear.

5. Embrace the Body-Positive Mindset:

At the end of the day, the spa is about YOU. It’s your time to relax, recharge, and celebrate your amazing body. So, strut in with confidence, own your body and have the best experience ever!

Bonus Tip: Check out online reviews, social media and spa websites for inclusivity-focused language and imagery. A spa that actively celebrates diversity is more likely to be a welcoming and comfortable space for everyone.

Remember, you deserve a spa experience that’s as fabulous as you are. Book that massage, soak in that tub and let your stress melt away bestie!
