What To Do If You Don’t Fit In Your Plane Seat

So, you’re boarding your flight, excitement buzzing, suitcase in hand – only to face a heart-stopping realisation: the seat feels… a little snug.

I know it can be hard, so take a deep breath and follow these tips for navigating airplane seating tightness with as little stress as possible.

Don’t Panic! A Guide to Navigating Airplane Seating Tightness

1. Speak to the Flight Attendants: Remember, they’re there to help! Discreetly inform them of your situation before the doors close and boarding is complete. They are the people who are most likely to be able to offer a solution to you, no matter what that may be. Don’t be shy. it’s their goal is to ensure everyone has a safe and comfortable flight.

2. Master the Art of the Empty Seat Request: If you find someone ends up sat next to you, ask flight attendants if it’s possible to move to somewhere where there are two empty seats next to one another. Usually, I’ll ask as soon as I board a flight as that way they’re aware they may need to keep space free to ensure everyone’s comfort. Of course, you can also ask at check-in and the boarding gate, too. You can read my guide to asking for additional space here.

3. Be a Seat Guru Guru: Before your flight, research seating options using websites like SeatGuru or Aero LOPA . They provide invaluable information on seat dimensions, legroom, and even recline angles. Passenger reviews and traveller photos are a great way to see what you should expect once on-board from a non-biased perspective.

4. Remember, You’re Not Alone: Feeling cramped happens to everyone, regardless of size or shape. Airlines are typically making their seats smaller in order to cram more people in and as a result, space is becoming tighter and tighter. Be patient, be kind to yourself and don’t let this bump in the road dampen your travel spirit.

5. Most Importantly, Don’t Be Ashamed: Your comfort matters! Addressing your needs is not a burden, it’s essential for a safe and enjoyable flight. Speak up, advocate for yourself, and remember you deserve to fly comfortably.

With a little preparation and a confident approach, you can navigate any airplane seating situation. So, take a breath, remember these tips and let your adventurous spirit soar. Happy travels, bestie!
