T-Mobile and SpaceX to Partner to Eliminate ‘Dead Zones’ With Satellite Connectivity

T-Mobile and SpaceX announced plans for a partnership that would offer smartphone connectivity virtually anywhere in the United States – even in so-called “dead zones” – with a new “satellite-to-cellular” service.
The new offering would utilize SpaceX’ Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit and T-Mobile’s nationwide mid-band 5G spectrum to provide mobile phone customers with what the two termed “near complete coverage” across the country.  It would cover many remote areas of the country that have never been served by wireless connectivity.
“We’ve always thought differently about what it means to keep customers connected,” said T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert in explaining the goals behind launching the new service.
The goal, the two said is to eliminate “mobile dead zones” keep customers connected even when out of reach of cellular towers.
T-Mobile and SpaceX said they also hope to establish similar service with international partners whereby T-Mobile USA customers would be able to benefit from the service when abroad.
