Air Canada said it plans to add over 6,000 seats in some markets served by Lynx Air, the troubled ultra-low-cost carrier that will suspend operations Sunday night.
The airline said that the move is designed to help Lynx Air customers return home or make alternative travel arrangements for planned trips.  Air Canada also said it would cap fares in these markets.
Calgary-based Lynx Air was granted creditor protection in the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act on Thursday, citing “significant headwinds including rising operating costs, high fuel prices, exchange rates, increasing airport charges, and a difficult economic and regulatory environment,” the carrier said in a statement announcing the move.
Air Canada’s capped fares will be available for purchase before February 26, which is the date of Lynx Air’s shutdown, for travel across Canada prior to April 2, in order to help former Lynx Air customers during the busy spring break and holiday travel periods.
The airline’s added capacity of 6,000 seats on Lynx Air routes will be available on flights between certain Canadian city pairs as well as some transborder flights between February 25 and March 19, it said.
