Christmas Day in Cyprus is an important holiday, celebrated on December 25th by the Greek Orthodox majority. The Christmas season in Cyprus lasts forty days, and preparations include fasting throughout Advent. There are two public holidays in Cyprus in January – New Year’s Day on the 1st of January and Epiphany which is observed on January 6th.



New Year’s Day in Cyprus , also called the Day of Ayios Vassilis, features St. Basil’s Day cake and midnight fireworks.



Epiphany in Cyprus is among the oldest Christian festivities, also referred to as the 12th day of Christmas or Three Kings Day. Parades and picnics are among the festivities, along with unique traditions like diving for a cross in Larnaca’s waters. Those who retrieve it are said to receive blessings for the entire year.

Limassol Carnival in Cyprus is a 10-day traditional pagan festival that earned UNESCO Intangible Heritage status in 2015. Taking place 12 days before Lent, on the Sunday preceding Ash Monday, and 50 days before Orthodox Easter, it is a vibrant celebration marked by lively parades lining the seafronts, masquerade balls, and street parties.



Green Monday , also known as Pure Monday in Cyprus, is the start of Orthodox Lent and involves traditional picnics and kite-flying. It is believed that the higher your kite goes, your spirit is brought closer to God.



The timing of both Limassol Carnival and Green Monday varies, typically falling in late February or early March depending on the Easter schedule which is guided by the full moon.
