Photo Essay: New York City in Fog is Strikingly Otherworldly

Dense fog transformed the Big Apple into a dreamy city on clouds over the weekend. The fog enveloped not only the New York City skyline but many of its streets and highways.
Fog creates an iridescent and eerie beauty that offers a strikingly different and rather stunning view of the beauty and mystery of the world around us. Even the mundane details of the natural world that people take for granted on a daily basis are even more mysterious and beautiful when shrouded in fog.
It was just over a month ago that a record amount of actual fog that has blanketed the Lower 48 for four days, lowering visibility, disrupting flights, causing traffic accidents, and delaying school opening times.  The fog  stretched from Canada to the Mexican border and impacted close to 100 million people. It’s safe to say that Saturday’s fog implemented fewer people but it was almost as dense and, as seen through the lens, capable of creating equally beautiful cityscapes.
We sent FBT Editorial Director Jonathan Spira – someone who is known for seeing beauty in everyday things that are easily overlooked by others and capturing it– out at night with a camera to document the city, and this is what he came back with.
