Here’s What’s Open and What’s Closed on the Day of the Queen’s Funeral

Monday, the day of the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, is a bank holiday in England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland.
While retailers are not required to shut on the day, it is likely that many will do so to mark the occasion, as well as to avoid attracting criticism.
The British Retail Consortium said in a statement that “[R]etailers are taking their lead from Government and are choosing to mark the Queen’s passing in ways they deem appropriate for their staff and customers.”
Elizabeth, who died at the age of 96 on September 8, 2022, ascended the throne on February 6, 1952.  Since then, the queen has had four major jubilees: her Silver in 1977, Golden in 2002, and Diamond in 2012. In addition, there were Ruby and Sapphire Jubilees in 1992 and 2017 respectively, although these were more modest affairs.  She celebrated her Platinum jubilee in May of this year.
Here’s what’s open throughout the United Kingdom on the day of the funeral, and what’s not.
GROCERS, SHOPS, AND DEPARTMENT STORES Most retailers including the major supermarket chains will be shut on the day of the funeral.  However, Sainsbury’s convenience stores and filling stations will be open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. local time and some of its stores in central London will be open during the day in order to serve those attending the funeral.
The John Lewis Partnership’s department stores as well as its Waitrose supermarkets will be closed on Monday as well. Aldi grocery stores will be closed as well, as will Lidl shops.
ROYAL MAIL There will be no Royal Mail postal collections or deliveries in England, Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland on Monday.  Services will then return to normal on Tuesday.
BANKS Banks, by definition, are closed on bank holidays.
FINANCIAL MARKETS The London Stock Exchange is closed for trading on Monday.
PUBS Individual pubs will make their own decisions on whether to be closed on Monday.  Some including JD Weetherspoon pubs will open later on that day.  Many will show footage of the funeral as it unfolds.
