It may be spring but what the National Weather Service termed “a significant winter storm” is brewing that will bring heavy snow and freezing rain into parts of the Midwest and the Northeast with widespread thunderstorms and showers possible from the Deep South through the Mid-Atlantic region.
Travelers should expect significant flight delays in impacted areas and the possibility of flight cancellations. Hazardous driving conditions are expected, particularly in sections of the I-95 corridor in the New York metro area.
Heavy snow will fall across almost every major mountain range from the Sierra Nevada in California to the Front Range in Colorado.  Accumulations of up to 13” (33 cm) in some areas.
At lower elevations, expect moderate rain along the I-5 corridor which includes Seattle, Portland, and Sacramento.
The Northeast is facing particularly wicked conditions.
Up to 4” (102 mm) or rain is expected in some areas, with 2.5” (64 mm) to 3.5” (89 mm) likely in most parts of the region and a high probably of rainfall rates of 0.25” (6 mm) to 0.5” (12 mm) per hour in most parts of the region.
The total rainfall amounts are trending upward for western Long Island, New York City, and northeastern New Jersey.
