E-Mail Bomb Threat Prompts Evacuation of British Airways Flight to London

A British Airways flight bound from Bermuda to London’s Heathrow Airport was scrubbed after local authorities received a bomb threat against the flight via e-mail.
BA FLigh5 158 was already on taxi at L.F. Wade International Airport, formerly Bermuda International Airport, already 40 minutes delayed after having pushed back at 9:29 p.m. local time. The tower told the flight deck to move to an isolated area for a possible disembarkation.
“ Speedbird 18B cancel takeoff clearance, cancel takeoff clearance… we have received some information regarding a bomb threat,” an air-traffic controller told the pilots, which they then acknowledged.  “Okay, cancel takeoff clearance. Would you like us to leave the runway?”
The Boeing 777 came to a halt and passengers were quickly evacuated through the forward left-hand door using airstairs in what was described as a rapid disembarkation.
The threat resulted in the closure of nearby roads “while the airport building and its environs were searched by airport security” a spokesman for the Bermuda Police Service told local media.
“Police were notified by staff at the LF Wade International Airport of a bomb threat that was received via e-mail.
No incendiary device was found.
“Once the all-clear was given and the airport was declared safe, regular traffic flow was restored,” he said.
The flight was rescheduled to the following evening, and passengers were provided with guidance on how to claim reimbursement for overnight accommodations, meals, and transportation.
“Our teams are caring for our customers and supporting crew as we work to get them on their way as soon as possible.”
