‘Suffs,’ ‘Stereophonic’ Lead 2024 Outer Critics Circle Awards

The Outer Critics Circle award winners for the 2023-2024 Broadway season were announced Monday morning. The awards encompass 27 categories and include both Broadway and Off-Broadway shows.
“Suffs” and “Stereophonic” were awarded Outstanding New Broadway Musical and Outstanding New Broadway Play, respectively, while “Appropriate” and “I Can Get It For You Wholesale” took home honors for Outstanding Revival of a Play and a Musical, respectively.
“Primary Trust” was recognized as Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play and “Dead Outlaw” received the nod for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical.
The play “Oh, Mary!”, a slightly unhinged play that reimagines Mary Todd Lincoln as a frustrated cabaret singer, was recognized with the John Gassner Award, given to a new American play that was written  by a new playwrights and named after a former Yale professor of playwriting and drama who discovered Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller, among others, and also served as the president of the Outer Circle.

Jessica Lange was recognized as Outstanding Lead Performer in a Broadway Play for her role in “Mother Play,” while Kara Young won for Outstanding Featured Performer in a Broadway Play for her role in “Purlie Victorious.”
Kelli O’Hara took home honors as Outstanding Lead Performer in a Broadway Musical for her role in “Days of Wine and Roses” while Kecia Lewis was recognized as Outstanding Featured Performer in a Broadway Musical for herrole in “Hell’s Kitchen.”
In the off-Broadway world, Andrew Durand was recognized as Outstanding Lead Performer in an Off-Broadway Musical for his role in “Dead Outlaw,” while Jay O. Sanders won Outstanding Performer in an Off-Broadway Play  for his role in “Primary Trust.”
Meanwhile, Daniel Austin and Jessica Stone were recognized as Outstanding Director of a Play, for “Stereophonic,” and of a Musical, for “Water for Elephants,” respectively.
The awards will be presented to the winners on May 23 at an event at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center.
Founded in 1949, the Outer Critics Circle is an organization of writers covering New York theatre for out-of-town and foreign newspapers, national publications, and other media beyond Broadway.
