12 People Injured After Turbulence Strikes Qatar Airways Flight to Dublin

Twelve people were injured after a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Dublin encountered turbulence on Sunday.
The incident comes days after a Singapore Airlines aircraft encountered “sudden extreme turbulence” that left one man dead and an additional 73 people injured. The aircraft rose and fell approximately 400’ (122 m) in less than one mine. The incident also left the cabin largely in tatters, with papers, cups, and water pitchers scattered about, and ceiling panels and piping hanging loose from the top of the fuselage.
A Boeing 787 Dreamliner operating as Qatar Flight 017, was en route to Dublin Airport from Hamad International Airport in Doha and over Turkey when it encountered the turbulence. The pilots elected to continue to their final destination without diverting.
The flight had left the gate at Dublin Airport at 7:55 a.m. local time and was wheels up at 8:07 a.m. The turbulence took place approximately one hour into the seven-hour flight at an altitude of 33,000’. The flight landed in Dublin at 1:03 p.m. IST and was at the gate at 1:11 p.m. Despite the incident, the flight was still 19 minutes early.
Emergency services met the aircraft at the gate, a spokesman for the Irish airport said. Six of the injured were passengers, and six were crew members. A total of eight people were seriously enough injured to have been taken to hospital upon arrival, but the airline did not release the distribution of that figure between passengers and flight attendants.
Qatar Airways did not provide any information about the type of turbulence the aircraft encountered, saying only the flight  had encountered turbulence while flying over Turkey.
“A small number of passengers and crew sustained minor injuries in flight and are now receiving medical attention,” Qatar Airways said in a statement. “The matter is now subject to an internal investigation.”
