Here Are the Headlines You May Have Missed This Weekend: Antisemitism, Tornadoes, Landslides, More Air Turbulence Injuries

“Here Are the Headlines You May Have Missed” is a weekly feature that offers brief overviews of important news that might have been overlooked during the weekend lull.
Severe Storms and Tornadoes Start Off Weekend By Killing At Least 21
A weekend of unusually severe weather centered in the Midwest was followed by the onset of a series of storms slowly making their way across the country to the Northeast. Destructive thunderstorms and tornadoes were responsible for at least 21 deaths over the weekend in parts of Kentucky, Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma.
Meanwhile, the National Weather Center reported that “a dangerous early-season heat wave over south Texas, the Central Gulf Coast, and southern Florida will persist through Memorial Day.” These areas are seeing at or near record daily high temperatures and heat index readings over 115° F (46° C) are possible.
At Least 2,000 Missing in Landslide in Papua New Guinea
At least 2,000 people are believed to have been buried alive in a landslide in Papua New Guinea, government officials reported. By Monday, the remains of only five people had been found.
Anti-Semitism: Plus Ça Change, Plus C’est la Même Chose
Social media is allowing antisemites to find new ways of promulgating modern versions of the antisemitic conspiracy theory book “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” and Henry Ford’s equally abhorrent “The International Jew.”  One user on Twitter published a color-coded spreadsheet rating 200 writers on their purported views on the “genocide” in Gaza.
The spreadsheet, entitled “Is Your Fav (sic) Author a Zionist?,”  makes sweeping assumptions about the definition of a Zionist, in part as if it were a bad thing to be, and classifies at least one author – Kristin Hannah – as such merely because she had posted a link to the Magen David Adom, the Israeli version of the Red Cross.  While the list was crude, it also had significant reach, accumulating over one million views in a matter of days.
A Second Air Turbulence Incident Injures 12
Twelve people were injured after a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Dublin encountered turbulence on Sunday. A Boeing 787 Dreamliner operating as Qatar Flight 017 was en route to Dublin Airport from Hamad International Airport in Doha and over Turkey when it encountered the turbulence.
Emergency services met the aircraft at the gate, a spokesman for the Irish airport said. Six of the injured were passengers, and six were crew members. A total of eight people were seriously enough injured to have been taken to hospital upon arrival, but the airline did not release the distribution of that figure between passengers and flight attendants.
Trump Booed, Jeered at National Libertarian Party Convention
At the national Libertarian Party Convention, presidential candidate Donald Trump was both cheered and loudy booed as he tried to pitch a “partnership” with the group. As Trump took the stage on Saturday. Libertarians clashed with pro-Trump attendees during the entirety of his speech and multiple people were ejected.
The Libertarian Party, which was formed in 1971, promotes civil liberties, non-interventionism, laissez-faire capitalism, and limiting the size and scope of government.  The party’s first presidential candidate, John Hospers, a philosopher and activist, set a record when he won one electoral vote in the 1972 presidential election, the highest number of electoral votes so far received by one of the party’s candidates.
Trump, as he left the stage, told the attendees that “[Y]ou can either nominate us and give us the position or give us your votes.”
Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the son of the assassinated senator, received somewhat of a warmer welcome on Friday when he heavily criticized Trump for caving into his medical advisors at the start of the pandemic and allowing lockdowns and vaccine mandates.
How Did That White Pooch Get in My Red Honda?
Finally, a Montana man who owns a late-model red Honda CRV and got into the wrong car after picking up a pizza pie not only didn’t realize his mistake but placed the blame on the owner of the car he borrowed. Vincent Zepeda was parked in front of Higherground Brewing Co. when he ran through snow and rain to what he thought was his car, jumped in, started it, and began to drive. When a strange dog in the backseat began to show interest in the pizza, he realized his mistake, but then told the world all about it in a social media post, claiming – with a distinct lack of self-awareness – that it was the other owner’s fault, as she had left the key fob in her vehicle, which allowed him easy access to, ahem, borrowing it.
