Weekend Wrap-Up: Here are the Headlines You Missed – Israeli Cease Fire, Volcano Eruption in Hawaii, First Female Austrian Chancellor Dies, Mexico Elects First Female President

“Here Are the Headlines You Missed” is a weekly feature that offers brief overviews of important news that might have been overlooked during the weekend lull.
Israel Agrees to Biden Cease-Fire Plan
An aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel has agreed to the framework President Biden presented that should bring an end to the war in Gaza.  Ophir Falk, the prime minister‘s chief foreign policy adviser, said it was “a deal we agreed to – it’s not a good deal, but we dearly want the hostages released… all of them.”
On Friday, President Biden announced that Israel had proposed a three-part plan that would ultimately lead to a complete cease-fire in the Gaza Strip as well as the return of all hostages who have been held by the terrorists since October 7.
It’s “time for this war to end,” Biden said.
Fallout from Trump Conviction
Former President Donald Trump, now a convicted felon awaiting his sentencing hearing scheduled to take place July 11, could potentially be sentenced to house arrest or prison and former prosecutors have said that his sentence may very depend on his comportment between now and the hearing.
In an interview with Fox News Sunday, the former president said that he would be “OK with it” if he were to be sent to prison or placed under house arrest, although he suggested it could be “tough for the public.”
The sentence is up to Judge Juan Merchan alone and, while the judge is known to be exceptionally compassionate with defendants who appear in his mental-health court cases, he is known to be the opposite with white-collar criminals. Trump has yet to show any remorse – something the probation department will examine in its pre-sentencing report – and he exited the court room after being found guilty with critical words for Merchan.
Austria’s First Female Chancellor Dies at 74
Former Austrian Bundeskanzlerin, or Chancellor, Brigitte Bierlein died on Monday at the age of 74.
Bierlein served as Chancellor from June 2019 through January 2020. In partnership with Austrian Bundespräsident Alexander Van der Bellen, she led Austria without much fanfare in the aftermath of the turmoil of the Ibiza scandal, which involved a video showing Heinz-Christian Strache, a former Vizekanzler of Austria and the leader of the FPÖ, or Freedom Party, and Johann Gudenus, a deputy party leader, discussing their party’s underhanded practices and intentions. After that, she retired from public life.
“We mourn Austria’s first female chancellor,” said the current Bundeskanzler, Karl Nehammer, in a post on social media. “She took on responsibility at a difficult time, out of love for the republic and her homeland Austria. Our country owes her a great debt of gratitude.”
Mexico Elects Claudia Sheinbaum as First Female President in its History
Claudia Sheinbaum was elected Mexico’s first female president on Sunday. Sheinbaum is a U.S.-educated scientist-turned politician. She is also the country’s first Jewish president. Sheinbaum previously served as mayor of Mexico City.
Hawaii’s Kīlauea Volcano Erupts
The Kīlauea volcano, located in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the island of Hawaii, began to erupt early Monday morning in an area that hasn’t seen an eruption in nearly 50 years.
The Volcano Alert Level for ground-based hazards was raised by the U.S. Geological Survey from watch to warning, and the Aviation Color Code was changed from orange to red after the new eruption began around 12:30 a.m. local time.
Idaho Doomsday Author Chad Daybell Gets Death Sentence
In Idaho, Chad Daybell, was found guilty of murder in the deaths of his first wife and his second wife’s youngest two children.  The case was marked by Daybell’s and his girlfriend (now spouse) Lori Vallow’s extremist religious beliefs about doomsday.
