Fiji Airways, formerly known as Air Pacific and the flag carrier of Fiji, will join the oneworld Alliance as its 15th member, the alliance announced.
The oneworld Alliance, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, currently has 13 members.
The alliance turned 25 on February 1, 2024. It has carried 9 million passengers since its founding.
Every six seconds, a flight operated by a oneworld airline is either taking off or landing somewhere in the world, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the group said.
Fiji Airways has been a oneworld Connect member for over five years. The carrier was founded in 1947. It currently serves 27 destinations and operates a mixed fleet of 14 Boeing and Airbus aircraft including Boeing 737 Max 8 planes and Airbus A350 wide-body jets.
The oneworld Alliance was first announced in September 1998 by its founding members, American Airlines, British Airways, the now-defunct Canadian Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Qantas.  It began operations on February 1, 1999.
At the time of its founding, its stated goals included smoother transfers for passengers travelling across all member airlines and greater support to passengers regardless of which member airline they are travelling with.
The group currently has 13 member airlines including the four surviving founding airlines as well as Alaska Airlines, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, and SriLankan Airlines as well as Fiji Airways as a oneworld Connect partner.
Later this year, Oman Air will become the alliance’s 14th member.
