Audi Reveals Premium Platform Electric, an All-New All-Electric Drive Architecture for Its Next Generation EVs

An Audi A3 Cabriolet,
Audi unveiled its new all-electric drive architecture, which it dubbed Premium Platform Electric, that offers greater efficiency and noticeably improved performance over current platforms from Ingolstadt.
The Premium Platform Electric is making its debut in the new Audi Q6 e-tron, which is one of 32 new product launches Audi is planning over the coming 24 months.
The new platform, designed in partnership with Porsche, is intended to be the foundation of Audi’s EV strategy going forward. Both Audi and Porsche are subsidiaries of the Volkswagen Group.
In developing PPE, Audi completely redesigned the electric motors it uses as well as the power electronics, the transmission, the high-voltage battery and all related components, making them purpose-built for an EV.
The benefits of the new platform include greater interior space due to its size having been reduced by 30%, 25 miles (48 km) more driving range, and the ability to apply significantly more automation in the production of the platform and in electric vehicles in Audi factories.
Notably, Audi was able to largely forgo the use of heavy rare earth elements thanks to the use of an innovative electric oil pump in the transmission in rotor oil cooling. This configuration also increases power density by 20%, the Bavarian automaker said.
