WestJet said on Wednesday it has begun the process of cancelling and consolidating flights as it prepares for a union strike.
“In the coming 48-hours the WestJet Group will work to park aircraft, in a measured, phased and safe approach,” the company said in a statement.
The strike, threatened by its aircraft maintenance engineers and other technical operations employees, would take place if the Canadian Industrial Relations Board refuses to intervene.
The carrier said some 6,500 customers will be impacted by 40 flight cancellations over June 18 and June 19. Travelers are being advised to check the airline’s website prior to leaving for the airport on those days.
Meanwhile, the airline said it will not allow any possible job action to compromise flight and passenger safety.
“We will continue to manage our operations to the highest degree of safety and will never compromise in this area,” said Diederik Pen, the airline’s president.
