Tesla filed suit against battery-maker Matthews International, a former supplier to the EV maker, for allegedly stealing the Austin, Texas-headquartered company’s trade secrets.
The suit, filed on Friday in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges that Matthews used its access to Tesla trade secrets to share them with the automaker’s competitors. The suit also alleges that the former supplier filed patent applications incorporating Tesla’s intellectual property without its consent.
In its court filing, Tesla said that Matthews owes damages that it
“conservatively estimates will exceed $1 billion” for its misuse of the EV maker’s IP.
In a statement released Monday, Matthews said it would “vigorously defend the matter,” and termed it a “new tactic” in Tesla’s ongoing efforts to bully Matthews and take Matthews’ “valuable intellectual property.”
