Oscar the Grouch Named United Airlines’ First Chief Trash Officer

United Airlines announced a new consumer education campaign and named Oscar the Grouch its chief trash officer.
Oscar the Grouch is a Muppet character created by Jim Henson and Jon Stone for the renowned TV program “Sesame Street.”  Oscar is known for his love of trash, something evinced by the song “I Love Trash,” in which Oscar sings a paean to the rubbish he loves so much.
The consumer education campaign is focused on raising awareness of sustainable aviation fuel.
“Oscar’s five decades of trash experience… shows how garbage can help fuel the future of air travel,” the airline said in a statement.
United has invested in the future production of three billion gallons of sustainable aviation fuel, something it said was the most of any airline.  Meanwhile, passengers will be able to contribute to the airline’s Sustainable Flight Fund to lower their effective carbon footprint of a flight when buying a ticket.
The airline expressed excitement about its new CTO.
“United has enlisted Oscar to help us educate the traveling public of all ages about SAF and rally them to the cause of fighting climate change,” said the airline’s chief communications officer, Josh Earnest. “From banana peels to fryer grease, Oscar is uniquely qualified to help us explain why trash could be the treasure that fuels the jets of the future.”
