Amtrak, the operator of most of the United States’ passenger rail service, announced new low-cost “Night Owl Fares” that permit travel along the Northeast Corridor for as little as $5.
Night Owl Fares – which are effectively off-peak fares – are available on early morning and late evening departures on trains operating on routes between New York and Washington, D.C. including Philadelphia and Baltimore.  They go into effect on departures starting at 7 p.m. EDT through 5 a.m.
Off-peak connotes a time when there is little demand.  Prices at off-peak times are typically much lower than at peak times.
The Northeast Corridor runs from Boston through Providence, New Haven, New York City, Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore, to Washington, D.C.
The new fares allow travelers to “save big on early morning and late evening departures,” Amtrak said in a statement.
A one-way ticket from New York to Philadelphia is $10 as is travel from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C., and New York to Wilmington, Delaware. Travel from New York to Washington, D.C.  is $20, while New York to Baltimore-Washington International Airport or Washington, D.C. to Newark Liberty International Airport is $15.   Finally, Philadelphia to Baltimore and New York City to  Newark Liberty International Airport are both $5 off-peak.
