Germany will be brought to a standstill on Monday if two labor unions representing transport workers carry out their threat for mass strikes.
The job actions is expected to cause widespread disruptions on railways and at airports.
Approximately 2.5 million employees in the public sector – including at airports – are represented by ver.di, and railway and transport union EVG is negotiating on behalf of an additional 230,000 employees at the Deutsche Bahn and various bus companies.
The strikes are slated to begin just after midnight local time and impact rail and air services throughout Monday. The strikes will be the latest job actions and protests that have hit major European countries in recent months as higher food and energy prices impact the cost-of-living there.
Ver.di said it wants a 10.5% wage increase, with a pay increase of at least €500 ($544) per month, while EVG is asking for a 12% raise which translates to an increase of at least €650 per month.
“We represent groups of workers who literally run this country and are paid far too badly to do so,” said ver.diVorsitzender Frank Werneke.
