Plus Size Hammock Fun: A Guide to Hammocks While Plus Size

Scrap the single – it’s time to double up

Most standard hammocks are only about five feet wide, which isn’t enough for a plus size person. Look for a hammock that is instead at least six feet wide, or – even better – eight feet wide. The easiest way to do this? Go for a two-person hammock instead of a single hammock. This should give you plenty of room to spread out and relax without feeling cramped. And don’t forget to check the weight recommendations for extra peace of mind when purchasing – some hammocks like this Camping Hammock can hold up to 300kg.

Give yourself more space (and comfort!) by lying diagonally

If you’re planning on spending a fair bit of time in your hammock, then it’s important to make sure you’re gonna be comfortable and looking after your body. If you’re a plus size hammock newbie, you may find yourself trying to lie in a straight line down the hammock, with your head at one support and your feet at the other… and will soon find yourself cocooned and nursing a bad back if you do! Instead, lie on a diagonal, with your head slightly on to one side, and your feet to the other. This will distribute your weight more evenly across the hammock, and spread out the fabric, making it easier to get comfortable and leaving you with more space. The bonus? It’s way better for your back too.

Consider buying a metal hammock frame

We know the Instagram dream is to have a lush hammock hanging between two beautiful trees with an equally beautiful backdrop to match, but sadly this can’t always be the reality, especially if any of the trees you have your eye on have risk of woodworm or weak branches. If you’re looking to set up your very own plus size hammock for relaxing summer days in your garden, then consider opting for a metal frame. This will provide a sturdy base for your hammock , giving you more peace of mind.

Take note of how close to the ground the hammock hangs

When deciding on whether to use a hammock or not, pay attention to how high from the ground it is hung. You will want to be able to get in and out of the hammock easily, so make sure it is not too high off the ground… but not too low either! A good rule of thumb is for the lowest part of the hammock to hang about 18 inches off the ground,  but don’t be afraid to adjust the height as you need. This way, you can enter and exit the hammock without too much difficulty.

Boing, boing – do the bounce test

Have you ever been tempted to prop your bum on a hammock and have a little bounce to see how it fares under your weight, only to feel like you’ll look silly and not bother? Well, fear not! Whether you’ve set up a hammock in your own back garden for the warm summer evenings, are opting for a hammock as your choice of bed on a camping trip, or have stumbled across a beautiful hammock on your exotic adventures, bouncing gently to check the supports are safe is a method used by hammock users of all sizes and experience… so you’ll actually look like a pro! Simply sit, bounce slightly, lie back once you feel comfortable, and enjoy.

Could you be tempted by a lazy afternoon in a plus size hammock now? No matter which hammock you choose, you’re sure to enjoy many hours of relaxation in it. Just be sure to follow these key tips and you’ll be able to use it safely and comfortably. Happy hanging around!
