Hyatt Hotels and Resorts announced the reflagging and reopening of the Pell, boutique hotel that is a JdV by Hyatt brand.
JdV by Hyatt, formerly Joie de Vivre Hotels, a collection of independent boutique properties. Hyatt acquired Joie de Vivre’s parent, Two Roads Hospitality, in 2019.
Located on Aquidneck Island in Rhode Island, the Pell, which originally opened in 1989, underwent a $9 million renovation encompassing public spaces and guest rooms prior to reopening its doors to guests.
Aquidneck Island, which is also known, perhaps confusingly, as Rhode Island, is an island in Narragansett Bay in the state of Rhode Island. Its three towns combined have a population of just over 60,000 people.
The island is connected to the mainland by several bridges and is a 15-minute drive from Newport, a New England summer resort known as the City-by-the-Sea, which played an outsized role as home to some of the country’s wealthiest people during the Gilded Age. Aquidneck Island is home to two well-known boarding schools, St. George’s School in Middletown and Portsmouth Abbey School in Portsmouth, as well as the International Yacht Restoration School.
The 127-key property offers a variety of standard rooms and suites, the latter which feature a separate sitting area. Two suites offer kitchenettes, but all have a small refrigerator. The rooms and suites feature a neutral light earth tone décor emphasizing various shades of tan. The 400-square-foot (37-square-meter) Studio Suite features a balcony with a forest view, a king-size bed, a kitchenette, wet bar, separate sitting area, and bath with walk-in shower.
Dining options for guests include the Helmway, which is open for breakfast and dinner. It also offers in-room dining for guests. The restaurant is helmed by Chef Will Wallbank, a graduate of Johnson & Wales University in Providence.
