‘New York, New York,’ ‘Merrily We Roll Along,’ ‘Leopoldstadt’ Lead 2023 Outer Critics Circle Nominations

The 2023 Outer Critics Circle award nominations were announced Tuesday, although, due to continued pandemic disruptions, there was once again no formal ceremony at the storied Oak Room in New York City’s Algonquin Hotel this year to mark the pronouncements.
Leading the nominations was “New York, New York,” a new musical that is loosely based on the 1977 Martin Scorsese movie of the same name with music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb, with 12 including Outstanding New Broadway Musical and Outstanding Lead Performer in a Broadway Musical.
“Leopoldstadt,” the critically acclaimed play that is a sweeping portrait of a Viennese Jewish family from the end of the 19th century through the period following the end of the Second World War, led in garnering the most nominations for a Broadway play including  Best New Broadway Play and Outstanding Featured Performer in a Broadway Play.

Meanwhile, “Merrily We Roll Along,” the Stephen Sondheim musical with a story arc based on a 1934 play of the same name by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart that was a flop when it opened in 1981, won the most nominations for an off-Broadway musical including Outstanding Revival of a Musical.
Finally, “Some Like It Hot,” a new musical that is based on the 1959 MGM/UA feature film of the same name, which in turn was based on the 1935 French Film “Fanfare d’amour,” received ten nominations including Outstanding New Broadway Musical and Outstanding Lead Performer in a Broadway Musical.
Winners will be announced on May 15, 2023, and the awards will be presented on May 25 at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center.
In addition, the OCC announced special achievement to fight director B.H. Barry to recognize his six-decade career as well as his work in the current production of “Camelot.”
The Outer Critics Circle is an organization of writers covering New York theater for out-of-town newspapers, national publications, and other media beyond Broadway.
