The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of two million Peleton stationary exercise bicycles due to multiple failures of a very basic part, the post holding the seat up.
“The bike’s seat post assembly can break during use, posing fall and injury hazards to the user,” the commission said in a statement.
The company’s home exercise bikes which carry the product PL01 can apparently cause fractured wrists as well as lacerations and bruises to users.  Peleton has received at least 35 exports of such incidents.
The bikes were available from Peloton as well as from Dick’s Sporting Goods stores from January 2018 through May 2023.
Peleton was founded in 2012 with a goal of using technology to make it possible for people with very little time for the gym to get the full experience of working out in a high-end studio cycling class while at home.  The company’s first Internet-connected stationary bicycle with a built-in tablet was introduced in 2014.  Peleton also makes rowers and treadmills, the latter which were subject to a product recall in 2021.  Over 125,000 treadmills were recalled due to safety hazards, mainly due to instances when “adult users, children, pets, and/or objects” were “pulled under the rear of the treadmill.”  The treadmill was also linked to at least one child’s death.  .
