A dangerous spring heat wave is slowly unfolding in the Pacific Northwest and will bring the region its first 90° (32° C) temperatures of the year.
The National Weather Service issued heat advisories for parts of the western United States.
“New daily record maximum temperatures are forecast this weekend for areas of the Pacific Northwest and interior California,” the NWS said in a weather statement.
Meanwhile, Environment Canada issued special heat statements for portions of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan.
Until now, temperatures in the region had been far cooler than usual.
On Friday, temperatures in the New York City metropolitan area were near or above 90° F , bringing a day that felt more July-like than May-like.  Saturday will be overcast while Sunday, Mother’s Day in the United States, will be cooler and mostly sunny.
In the center of the country, the NWS is forecasting a storm that will bring showers, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall.  Excessive rainfall and severe thunderstorms are forecast for the State of Texas.
