Plus Size Cruise Tips: Why Princess Cruises Are The Perfect Choice For Plus Size Travellers

If you are a plus size traveller, then you will be glad to know that Princess Cruises Royal Class ships are the perfect way to travel comfortably. These ships offer everything you need and more to make your cruise holiday as enjoyable as possible.

Plus size travellers often feel left out or uncomfortable when travelling, but this is not the case with Princess Cruises. Their Royal Class ships have been designed with your needs in mind, and feature spacious cabins, large public facilities and plenty of areas where you can relax in comfort without having to worry about whether or not you’ll fit.

Disclaimer: this post is in collaboration with Princess Cruises and Traverse Events, however, all opinions are our own. You can read more about our terms and conditions here.

Who Are Princess Cruises?

Princess Cruises are a leading cruise line that has been operating for over 50 years. They offer a wide range of itineraries to destinations all over the world, and their Royal Class ships are some of the most luxurious and spacious in the fleet.

What Are The Princess Cruises Royal Class Ships?

The Princess Cruises Royal Class ships are their newest and most luxurious ships. There are currently six in the fleet – the Royal Princess, Regal Princess, Majestic Princess, Sky Princess, Discovery Princess and Enchanted Princess.

We’ve been on both Sky Princess and Enchanted Princess, so we’ve truly had the chance to see what the Royal Class ships are like when you’re travelling in a larger body.

Why Are They Plus Size Friendly?

Cabins

All of the cabins on these ships have been designed with plus size travellers in mind. The beds are larger than average, there is plenty of space to move around the room and the sofas are super sturdy and comfortable. You can even ask for a bigger robe if you need one (the Lotus Spa ones were the best option).

The bathrooms, even in smaller cabins, are also a good size with plenty of space around the toilet and a large shower. I love that the bathroom unit is hollow so if you need that little bit of extra space, it’s there. Mini-Suites also have a bath which although we didn’t use it, we did test it out and it was definitely big enough to use.

One thing I will say is that the chairs on the balcony (if you have one) are not the most plus size friendly but if you’re going to be spending a lot of time out there, you can ask for another one and they’ll swap it out for you. Alternatively, you can take the chair from the desk out there as it has no arms.

Facilities

The public facilities on these ships are also plus size friendly. There are large chairs around the ship, lift access to all areas and plenty of space in the public toilets.

The only place we struggled with (on both Sky Princess and Enchanted Princess) was the Princess Theatre. These seats are a little tight and uncomfortable, so it’s great the performances are only 45 minutes long.

Restaurants and Bars

All of the restaurants and bars have plus size friendly seating options and if you’re not able to find one, they’re more than happy for you to ask. On our Sky Princess trip we ate at the same restaurant every night and every night they got out a more comfortable chair. By the last night, they had the chair ready and waiting and honestly, it made the world of difference.

There are some bar stools dotted about, most of which have backs so they’re easy to sit on. We used them a number of times and they felt sturdy and strong.

Spa (Lotus Spa and The Enclave)

If you want to treat yourself to a spa day, you’ll be glad to know that the spa facilities on these ships are also plus size friendly. The massage beds are sturdy and the staff are amazing and understanding. Plus, there is plenty of space in the changing rooms so you can get changed in comfort. They are, however, shared with others so you may want to bear this in mind.

Our favourite thing about the spa was that THE ROBE FIT! At roughly a size 26-28, the robe is one of the most inclusive we’ve tried so far.

Sun Loungers and Hot Tubs

One of the best things about these ships is that they have plenty of plus-size friendly sun loungers and hot tubs. This means that you can relax in comfort, without having to worry about squeezing into a smaller space.

For even sturdier sun loungers, The Sanctuary is a great option!

Tendors and Life Boats

One of the things that we’re always asked about here at Plus Size Travel Too is whether or not you can fit into a lifeboat or tenders (the smaller boats that take you from the ship to shore).

We’re happy to report that although we only used the tendors on Enchanted Princess, we had no problems at all. When getting onto the tendor from the ship there were three members of staff there to help with the big step onto the boat then once inside, there were benches to sit on with no bars or dividers in the way.

The stairs up to the top of the boats were very thin, so you may find you’re not able to sit at the top (which is also bench seating).

If you’re looking for a plus size friendly cruise line, then we would highly recommend Princess Cruises and their Royal Class ships.

They offer everything you need to have an enjoyable and relaxing holiday. Plus, the staff are amazing and very understanding. Nothing was too much trouble for them and whatever we needed to be comfortable, they were happy as long as we were happy.
